I almost need a Day-Timer to keep up with the I. Lewis Libby perjury and obstruction trial. So far these facts are known. I. Lewis Libby Jr. is charged with perjury and trying to obstruct an investigation into who leaked the name of C.I.A. officer Valerie Wilson.
Today his defense paraded a Who's Who of reporters and journalists across the stand, each in turn faithfully stating that no mention of Ms. Plame was ever made to them by Scooter. How can I say this.. So What! He didn't tell me either. This is a weak line of defense. Weak. These guys need to go find O.J.'s other glove, or something!
The most amazing thing that I've heard so far is that former deputy secretary of state Richard Armitage seems to be acknowledged as the original source of the leak. Why the hell isn't he on trial for publicly disclosing her identity to Bob Woodward?
"His wife works at the agency," Mr. Armitage said in a tape of the conversation played for the jury at Federal District Court. "His wife is an [expletive deleted] analyst. How about that?" He then explained it was Ms. Wilson who got Mr. Wilson the job to investigate the uranium report.
This perjury and obstruction trial is eye candy, a show for the public. It's a smoke screen that hides the naked underbelly of the most pugnacious administration this nation has ever witnessed. The best thing that could possibly happen is for Mr. Libby to stand up in that courtroom and tell all. Of course that won't happen. He's a loyalist even when it hurts. Besides that, he wouldn't get his presidential pardon. I would call him a True American Hero if he told us the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. Perhaps he is just a product of his environment, that being a White House administration that only knows it's own version of any truth, and so he really doesn't have anything to say in his own defense.
